The Tropenmuseum -previously the Colonial Museum- has always tried to give an impression of the contemporary. But now the collections, built up over a period of 150 years, deal largely with the past. They stem from the high days of colonialism, from Netherlands East Indies and Suriname. Old collections from the former Artis museum also found their way here. But does old mean outmoded? History isn't separated from the present. Old objects tell about conflicts between cultures, decolonization, about power and its transience. They show us our view of the former world and give insight into how today's world originated. And because the present is constantly changing, we keep looking at "old" objects with new eyes.
Marlene Dumas (South Africa, 1953), Coloured Drawings, 1997
Marlene Dumas's work is often about how people look at each other. She makes prejudices visible and searches for the contradictions in them. With the portraits in the series Coloured Drawings, she wanted to present a cross-section of the multicultural society. The portraits are arranged as a group, making it tempting to look for physical similarities and differences in the facial expressions and complexions. But this in turn prompts questions about the legacy of ethnology, which continues in the tendency to categorize each other by type or as a cultural group rather than to appreciate the individual. The runny ink Dumas used for her portraits makes it impossible to judge the physical characteristicas of the people depicted.
Two works of art from 1948. Both are about Indonesia. One is seen from the colonizer's viewpoint, the other from the colonized. Having returned to the Netherlands two years earlier in 1946, after a stay of eight years in Indonesia, Willem Hofker sketched a tranquil, idyllic picture of Bali, completely in the tradition of the colonial East Indies art of painting. At that time there were military actions -the Nederlands wanted to suppress Indonesia's struggle for independence. In December that year, the Dutch army stormed and occupied Yogyakarta, the temporary capital of the independent republic and the city where the politically engaged artist Affandi lived. He painted this self-portrait, titled Angry Mood, in that period. In the top right-hand corner of the painting Affandi wrote: "Estudy of a discontented face. I'm learning how to depict a discontented face".

Colonial panorama
Hongs at Canton, c. 1820
Stirling expedition group photo, New Guinea (Indonesia), 1926
Both works show Europeans confidently expanding their power and influence. The elongated format of the panorama seems to emphasize that feeling: take a look, here we are, in all our might! The Chinese roll painting, over tree yards long, gives a striking impression of eight European trading posts on a busy river. But, in fact, this is a small western enclave in an immeasurable large China. The enormity of the group photo is also impressive but this too is of a small group of westerners with dozens of hired Dayak porters entering the vast New Guinea.
The painting and the photo provide a compelling details. Not surprisingly, panoramic photos were very popular in the 19th century, as they brought the vastness of the world close to home.
Total City, IVAM (Valencia, Spain) Mai, 5 - Juli, 15 2012
[then in english]
A cidade ajuntada".
Between May and July this year was held at the IVAM (Valencia, Spain), a group exhibition under the generic name of "Total City", curated by Miguel Angel G. Cortes, part of the exhibition that took place between February and May 2010 "Mean Streets" (as expressly stated in the brochure), and we know that sequels ... So i just bring here only some works, all video material. This is the work of Marina Chernikova "Urban Surfin II", HC Gikje "Shiva" and Jack Cronin "Invisible City", and in another vein approaches the 3D digital video work Dionisio González "Cartografias para a remoçao. A cidade ajuntada".
Marina Chernikova, Urban Surfing II (2007)
Marina Chernikova been developing a series of photgraphs and videos based on the exploration of the structural dynamics of cultural traditions megacities (Moscow, Rome, Tokyo, Paris, Jerusalem, Amsterdam and Marseille). In this creative process, the elements of cultural and heterogeneous architectures are captured in varios cities and into a cluster of images to get new forms, new proportions. marina experience all the possibilities offered by digital manipulation of images in order to find the information visually dense as possible.
His work, like that of many video artists can be found free on the net. For Surfing Urban II, then included a first-han version -bear in mind that what I have uploaded to the network is a recording-. However, while rewriting, is valuable, because here is really how people see the video in a museum. And in this regard it is notworthy that the form as presented in the IVAM does not allow viewing assured that there is an excess of works on display (in this case video projection screens), which some interference on other, without that being something desired by the artist who have performed.

Rosa Menkman, "Demolish the eerie void" (2010)

The video of Rosa Menkman "Demolish the eerie void" is not seen in "Total City" at IVAM, but a year earlier in the Atarazanas (Valencia), in exposing Observatory 2011 "Error. The motor accident as art", which was prominent works that can be ascribed to glitch art.
The presence of this video, which recreates a multimedia installation, the culmination of this collection is very appropriate, because it reinforces the idea between the remaining commom: strong dreams of poetic content produced with resources that would apparently lead to results "cold", "impersonal" and other adjectives associated with the use of electronic resources and digital art. However, nothing further. And this diversion of results initially expected have much to do with the light of the spectacular game with technology and its use as a resource if it were pre-technological. As an approach to the landscapes of Middle Earth tat lies ahead.

Mutu's works often make the female body central, and confront the
viewer with "plant-like or animal-like elements and intertwined abstract

More recently, Mutu has exhibited sculptural installations. Suspended Playtime

Sobre la artista / About the artist
Clemence von Wedemeyer, The Fourth Wall, 2008-2010.

Butthat's not theonly relevant question. Followingthe very method ofClemencevonWedemeyer,we need to considerthe device itself, which in this case isthe viewing of re-recordings inthe contextof a Center forContemporary Art.And inparticular, howisbehind thisactionthe concern -even in this type ofpublic research centersfor the arts- for copyright. Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige, A letter Can Always Reach its Destination, 2012.
Triennale de Paris 2012 presents a video installation, A Letter Can Always Reach Its Destination,
which investigates the narrative structure and the human impact of the
advance-fee fraud commonly known as the “Nigerian Letter” or the “419
fraud”. This contemporary form of an older genre of confidence scam has
been facilitated by the widespread use of email and the proliferation of
various “email-harvesting” softwares. These cyber attacks, originating
most often in Africa or Russia, prey on the gullibility of unsuspecting
Internet users, and use the same narrative strategies previously
employed in earlier, epistolary versions of the con: they aim to seduce
the recipient (victim) into investing a large sum of money with the
promise of windfall returns. Falsely intimate, often exuding
desperation, sometimes to the extent of being comical or improbable,
these emails protect the identities of hacker criminals who will go to
any extreme to make their illicit profits. The artists turn their focus
to probing these Kafkaesque parables: they asked a diverse group of
actors to read, out loud, a series of these cyber-scamming letters that
they have carefully selected, then project the footage, where the film’s
actors appear as holograms on the surface of the screen.

In Memoirs of Ntifa (2011) two independent screens facing each other, one silent and one sound: images from silent home movie from the 1970s in Morocco, opposite images tounées current documentaries on video in France. The installation shows a step of the manufacturing process of a film.
The artist questions these silent pictures, questions his
parents—creators of the pictures - and the protagonists, the Jewish
community of the Atlases, spread the world over. These images from
memory are presented in a very real material form for the artist and are
given resonance from the “sounds” of the archival footage. The artist
awakens memories by confronting the rediscovered people in the pictures
with their past: his family memories, over the millennia, built through
cultural movements, migrations at different points in history, most
notably the post-Sefarad exiles and those in the post-war 20th century.

Hassan Khan’s video installation Jewel (2010, 35 mm film transferred to HD) opens with a cloud of lights flickering to a soundtrack —produced by Khan himself— of hypnotic drones. But one soon discovers that these lights are not stars or a coastal hamlet at night, but a swarm of hideous fang-faced anglerfish —the elegant sparkling being nothing other than the light emitted from the strange growth on their faces: a lure for prey. As a ferocious beat sets in, the image of the anglerfish freezes and shape-shifts, “fossilizing” as a pattern of lights. The camera pulls out, and the fish pattern is shown to be punched into a revolving object —a totemic sort of disco ball surrogate— around which two men, one younger and one older, each perform a strange dance of desperate flailing, drowning, falling, grabbing, and whipping gestures. It is a spare scene of some kind of sinister, yet perfectly viable Arab subculture collectively reveling in a response to total collapse —one in which dancing, limbs flailing in the air, becomes a powerful and resilient performance of futile gestures. Moving with the ambivalence of marionettes commanded by forces that are not theirs, the work draws to a close with the scene slowly receding into darkness in a single continuous tracking shot. What is it that haunts these men and compels them to act, to move? [extracted from http://www.re-title.com/public/newsletters/17_Feb_11_-_Photography_Film_Video_Feature_Newsletter_0.htm]
