Paris is being held at the Triennale, "Intense Proximité" between April 20 and 26 August.

The works presented have been allocated between the main floor, which is at the height of the Avenue President Wilson, and the lower floors, including who is half underground, under the old theater of the Palais de Tokyo, which has been opened after the reform has been the center of contemporary art, closed for four months until it reopened last April.

Of these two levels we refer first to the deepest, the underground, which has more interest.

As the attached video is posted on youtube, if you enter there you have posted a text that explains in French and English which is the video, as told in the exhibition catalog. Here is what I'll give my opinion. Although it has become commonplace in the introduction Comtemporary art exhibitions video ethnographic or anthropological content, the present two issues of interest. First, there is a gadget at the end (which appears when one member of the community talking to a mobile), which reveals, on one hand the contemporaneity of the images despite the vintage aesthetic presentation and on the other hand, there is no point of the alien planet to technological development in the field of communications. Second, it is noteworthy that, despite the penetration of digital technology to more remote areas in (actually in this case not so remote, because the ceremony showing the video is a classic stories of exotic places , so I imagine it must be closely integrated into the tourist tours), but despite all this the custom of ritual remains. It seems that the phenomenon of globalization means simultaneously, on one hand a widespread practice repeating some invariblemente worldwide, but otherwise well and at the same time, an increase of maintenance even the most unique features each place, and there seems to be both a gesture of resistance, as it seems that globalization has implied both trends: the extension and generalization of some forms of behavior that become universal for those headings, while the diversity, which feeds on the enhancement and dissemination of the peculiarities of each place.

The presentation of the work of Köken Ergun at the Palais de Tokyo is made in the form of media installation with video broadcast a television monitor and reproductions of magazine covers some of Philippine gay community in Israel and Tel Aviv in particular.

In the presentation I'm doing here of Binibining Promised Land, I wanted to evoke the spaciousness of the installation made by Köken Ergun at the Palais de Tokyo through a multi-staged. In one of them the installation be seen as it stands at the Palais de Tokyo in the plant -1 (or first in the descent to the ground), in another be seen the video shown in the installation on a television monitor, presented here directly on the screen embedded in the blog, and a third screen is a amateur video showing the Central Bus Station in Tel Aviv, the Tachana Merkazit that develop the beauty contests and other activities of the gay and transgender immigrants/returnees(1) Philipinnes, taking advantage of the Sabat day of no activity on the Station.
_________________
(1) Must refer to immigrants and returnees, because in Jewish tradition the return of Jews to the land of Israel is at home. And this is an issue that can not be overlooked in the context of a research project that investigates migration, roots and uprooting. Surely that is the reason for the choice of the title of the work for presentation at the Palais de Tokyo: Binibining Promise Land, because the promised land is the land of Israel for Jews.

The film Siddieqa, Firdaus, Abdallah, Soelayman, Moestafa, Hawwa and Dzoel-Kifl takes us for 40 minutes (22 minutes are given here) in the universe of seven Dutch children, three to fourteen, raised in Islam .

In Memoirs of Ntifa (2011) two independent screens facing each other, one silent and one sound: images from silent home movie from the 1970s in Morocco, opposite images tounées current documentaries on video in France. The installation shows a step of the manufacturing process of a film.

The artist questions these silent pictures, questions his parents—creators of the pictures - and the protagonists, the Jewish community of the Atlases, spread the world over. These images from memory are presented in a very real material form for the artist and are given resonance from the “sounds” of the archival footage. The artist awakens memories by confronting the rediscovered people in the pictures with their past: his family memories, over the millennia, built through cultural movements, migrations at different points in history, most notably the post-Sefarad exiles and those in the post-war 20th century.

Hassan Khan, Jewel (2010)

The work of Hassan Khan, Jewel, is touring the world. He has performed almost simultaneously at the Triennale de Paris and The New Musseum of New York.

Hassan Khan’s video installation Jewel (2010, 35 mm film transferred to HD) opens with a cloud of lights flickering to a soundtrack —produced by Khan himself— of hypnotic drones. But one soon discovers that these lights are not stars or a coastal hamlet at night, but a swarm of hideous fang-faced anglerfish —the elegant sparkling being nothing other than the light emitted from the strange growth on their faces: a lure for prey. As a ferocious beat sets in, the image of the anglerfish freezes and shape-shifts, “fossilizing” as a pattern of lights. The camera pulls out, and the fish pattern is shown to be punched into a revolving object —a totemic sort of disco ball surrogate— around which two men, one younger and one older, each perform a strange dance of desperate flailing, drowning, falling, grabbing, and whipping gestures. It is a spare scene of some kind of sinister, yet perfectly viable Arab subculture collectively reveling in a response to total collapse —one in which dancing, limbs flailing in the air, becomes a powerful and resilient performance of futile gestures. Moving with the ambivalence of marionettes commanded by forces that are not theirs, the work draws to a close with the scene slowly receding into darkness in a single continuous tracking shot. What is it that haunts these men and compels them to act, to move? [extracted from http://www.re-title.com/public/newsletters/17_Feb_11_-_Photography_Film_Video_Feature_Newsletter_0.htm]

In 2010 we saw in Murcia, in the context of Manifesta 8 (in ARQUA Cartagena, Spain), a work of Hassan Khan interesting "Muslingauze RIP", "a partial portrait of the social and sublimation of Thatcherite England as a product exotic "[Pocket Guide for Manifesta 8].

Between 16 and 18 May I was in Paris. The main objective was to see the Triennale, at the Palais de Tokyo, but there were other surprises. The best, Les Maitres du Désordre exposure in the Quai Branly Museum (the former Musée de l'Homme). I have prepared a recreation of some of the pieces, especially video that can be seen in the exhibition. But first, be good to see the bande-annonce prepared by the Museum.

Reviewing the things on the net about this show I realize that there is a very interesting series of CuteCatFaith, with English voiceover, worked. I include it because it complements my job well, as I did, to focus on the videos, I neglected to collect images of the exhibition space and staging developed by the curator Jean de Loisy, which constitutes a substantial part of the exhibition. In fact, I think it was just the way it presents the exhibition what got me.

Fool's Festival

Stephen Dean, Pulse (2001)

From the videos presented in the exhibition Les Maitres du Désordre, one of the most interesting is that of Stephen Dean, Pulse (2001). This is a high quality video that takes a few years touring exhibitions of all kinds. Because it supports many couplings. In principle, what is striking is the huge colorful, because it records a festival in India in which participants throw dust and liquids with very brightly colored dyes. Here it seems exposed for what he has to register a ritual atavistic, which survives in the contemporary globalized defining it in this respect that both draws attention, coexistence of archaic traditions with new practices quite often as incomprehensible as the first.

Performance, chamanisme, posesión.

This video is not of the exposition, but I brought here because
it captures a rare rave in the field starred by some people
who seem to hunters on a picnic, in a scene halfway between joke
and something very serious, a real revenge on what
should be a proper adult behavior.

Conjurations profanes

L'ejaculation.
Les cheveux rébarbatifs, l'épi.
Le bruit de mouchage, le ronflement.
L'évanouisement.
Le sifflage, le chant.
Les soupirs, etc."
